“To Be The Global Leader In The Bedding Industry” Hahahahahahahhahaaaa

For week 10, we had a very intensive Design Workshop organised by Chiba University and taught by Chiba University’s Vice President Watanabe. Our fellow students consist of Japanese students pursuing Bachelor Degree and Masters, and Chinese students pursuing Double Degree (with Industrial Design being their 2nd Degree), our TAs from SAD also joined too. Needless to say, they are all pretty darn smart and talented. This Design Workshop literally takes up our whole week, we went from brainstorming to finishing the CADing, rendering,  model making, video making all within the week itself. The theme of the workshop is to design a bed and the corresponding bedroom(optional) for 20 years later.

This is how the Schedule looks like

Watanabe sensei only really taught on the 1st day, then it’s all the groups working towards their project and then presenting to him the progress now and then. For my group itself, the 1st 2 days lasted from early morning all the way until about 8pm or so, for the 3rd day it’s until 11pm or so. The most intensive is the 4th day (the day before final presentation) in which we stayed until about 3am, some even later. Finally, we have the final presentation on the 5th day.

Something worth mentioning is that we visited 2 companies on the 1st day, Sleemon 喜临门 and Magilit 神灯科技. Sleemon 喜临门 is a furniture maker, we visited their bed-making section.

Bed factory

Magilit 神灯科技 is a bio-tech company committed on EEG (Electroencephalography) detection technology product research and market research, their current product consists of a sleep mask that can help improve one’s sleep, waking, and even dream control. Very fascinating stuff, I am intrigued and subscribed to further news regarding their work, in fact, I intend to buy one in the future perhaps, if the science behind it is truly legit. The company is started by Zhejiang University’s Ph.Ds, Masters, Bachelors and whatnot. They have this advertising video in which they say that their team is “情商高,智商高,颜值高” (translates to high EQ, high IQ, high face score(good looking), that’s a pretty funny moment praising oneself like that.

Of course, these 2 companies we visited are related to the theme for the workshop which is to design a bed and the corresponding bedroom(optional) for 20 years later. For my group, we did a modular kind of bed with several functions. Generally, we try to incorporate to the bed different emerging technologies that is supposedly useful for the people in the future.

It was an enriching experience overall, the one downside is that we sacrificed the progress of our theme this week focusing on this Design Workshop, hope that all will turn out fine eventually.

Cheers.

SAD is totally new to us and something that we do not experience as we have summer all year round. However, we are confident that with enough research, prototyping and testing, we will be able to come up with a solution that is effective, low cost and aesthetically pleasing.
