Since this week was recess week, many of us took this opportunity to travel around China to explore this vast country. Some of us went to Inner Mongolia to bask in the sands of the north, some decided to travel south to Yunnan to experience the super spicy food :D. As for me and my group, we headed to Zhangjiajie, the place that Avatar got it’s inspiration from.

You can kinda see why Avatar took inspiration from Zhangjiajie.

Last week, I ended the blog with us starting our train ride from Hangzhou to Zhangjiajie. It was a long and gruesome 17 hours of not being able to move much throughout the trip. However, this was all the rest we could have before we started trekking in the upcoming days. After the train ride, we had to take a bus to a smaller town in order to be ferried by our courteous Airbnb hosts up the mountain. After a full day of travelling, we were treated to a gorgeous view of the landscape of the nature reserve! We were pretty excited for what was to come. Below is a video of the place we were staying at.

Just a quick introduction to the nature reserve, it is a UNESCO site so it has considerable funding from both the UN and government to maintain and upkeep the whole area. Even though we stayed there for 4 days and 3 nights, it was still impossible to trek the entire forest. There were considerable number of shuttle buses around the park to shuttle passengers from point to point because the whole area was so large and the landscape was full of mountains.

As for what my group did at Zhangjiajie, we just did a whole lot of trekking, hiking and walking, getting lost and repeat. At the end of our first day there, we ended up on the other side of the park instead of our Airbnb and we almost didn’t make it back that day. I guess this is what adventure encompasses too. Anyways, I will let the pictures do most of the talking here because they sum up the beauty we experienced during this trip:)

Trekking in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
The road we took to Tian Men Shan… Windy and steep~~~

Entrance to tian men shan
It was a constant battle between the scenery and the clouds at tian men shan. The clouds were blocking our view at regular intervals!!!
We were so high on a few occasions, we were above the clouds:D
The water in the forest were so clear, you could see the base of the river. It was probably 2 to 3 metres deep.
I learnt that my room mate is scared of heights:D He was either holding onto me or the railings the whole time.
Food @ Li Fei’s Airbnb. This was a potato and pork dish.
After cooking in the kitchen, he would put the dish into another mini wok:D

As for our meals, we ate breakfast and dinner at the Airbnb because one of our host was a chef! The food we ate were all cooked with a wok as it had that burnt taste to it and we absolutely loved it! It has been a long time since we ate home cooked food since we left Singapore. As for our lunches, we usually brought some snacks out during the trip or we ate at some road side stalls along the trek. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed eating in Zhangjiajie:D

Now that the trip has ended, it is time to go back to the city and back to ZJU. Time for us to work on our theme project~~~

So… Is Zhangjiajie worth going? Yup! Future DATE students, remember to go there! You really won’t regret it. The name of the host is Li Fei and it is called 小印家(xiao yin jia)。
