Tung Lung Chau is an island located in the southeast of Hong Kong, I went there on a hike together with a few people from my hall! It was a hall event organised by one of the hall tutors and he brought us to this largely uninhabited island. The way to get there is to take a boat from Yau Tong and then it takes approximately 45mins ride on the boat.

From Yau Tong, you will have to walk around 10 minutes to Sam Ka Tsuen Public Pier. From there, you will have to purchase tickets for the ferry, the ferry takes around 45mins each way. You will have to purchase your return boat ticket in advance and specify the timing you would like to head back. The last boat leaves Tung Lung Chau at 5.30, so you should head early to the pier to get the best of what Tung Lung Chau has to offer! There are only ferries to Tung Lung Chau on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

People go to Tung Lung Chau generally for hiking and camping. Depending on which route you take, the hike can be pretty challenging if you’re new to hiking as some of the trails require you to climb using both your hands and your feet. However, there is a path that is generally more beginner-friendly but you will have to check out which direction it is. The hike takes you one round around the entire island so don’t worry about not missing out on the different vantage points! On the island itself, there are also different stalls that sell food such as instant noodles, toasts and a variety of drinks!

Ultimately, I felt that I really enjoyed this hike as I got to meet different people from my hall coming from different countries! It was a good experience hiking in a place that’s away from civilisation!
