Our theme leader presenting his product, Necho

As is quickly becoming customary in this blog, I will open by saying that we spent this week busy with our DIP projects. With the product launch at the end of the week, all of us were working full-time (or for some, overtime) in order to ensure that everything – the videos, the PowerPoint slides, the presentation scripts, the product demo – was ready on time.

We also had a rehearsal on Tuesday, though that ended up being pretty far from the real thing as hardly anyone was prepared at all. Nonetheless, it was a good opportunity to get a feel of what the venue was like and how it will be on the day itself.

This week also marked the end of our design fiction class. For direction I, which I am enrolled in, we did our final presentations – a small 5-minute play – for Professor Gui Yin to assess. It has been a really fun and enriching experience for all of us and I am glad to have went through it.

On Saturday, the product launch event (finally!) was held. With such a large venue, I am sure many of us(myself included) were extremely nervous as although the venue was not completely filled, it was still the first time that most of us are presenting in front of such a large audience. Nonetheless, our presentations went pretty smoothly, and thankfully no one fell asleep on stage!

Aside from the presentations, we also had a few performances by our SUTDents, including a dance and drama performance from Design Fiction direction I:

I’m sure it was great entertainment for everyone, particularly the dance, where everyone’s laughter could be heard even from stage. Nonetheless, if there’s one thing we gained from the Design Fiction class, it would be thick skin – so all’s well that ends well I guess.

We also had great performances from two bands as well as from Dance Derivativez. All in all, I am very glad that after so much hard work by presenters and performers alike, the event was pretty successful. Although we would like to kick back and relax after so much work, it is only the end of the beginning: now that DIP has ended, we are going to have to start on our main Augmented Human project. Hopefully we will be able to come up with something good in the remaining month.

Augmented Human, or Human Enhancement, is “any attempt to temporarily or permanently overcome the current limitations of the human body through natural or artificial means. It is the use of technological means to select or alter human characteristics and capacities, whether or not the alteration results in characteristics and capacities that lie beyond the existing human range.” With the development of Augmented Reality, Wearable Computing, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Human is coming into the mainstream and advancing into a new phase of contextually rich experiences for the human.
