Food plays a vital role in adapting to a new culture, ensuring your well-being and embracing your exchange experience fully. Hence the three main ways of navigating through your meals in UMD are the meal plans in the dining halls, cooking home food and eating/taking out food.

Dining halls in UMD:

There are three dining halls in UMD, Yahentamitsi, South campus, and North Campus dining hall.

Yahentamitsi is the most recent dining hall which has a huge variety of delectable food options to choose from. Yahentimitsi means A place to go to eat in Algonquian language.

These are some of the food options from the dining halls:

Buffalo Chicken burritos

Valentines Day special Chocolate tarts

Huge variety of cookies

Freshly baked pastries

Cooking at Home:

Ramen Specials

My friends and I had a delightful time cooking up a scrumptious batch of ramen together. Cooking up ramen with friends was more than just a meal, it was an unforgettable experience as during the meal we were able to share our experiences and forge stronger bonds with one another. Additionally, since we didn’t have enough bowls for everyone hence we made use of what we had and used mugs and the cooking pot in substitute for additional bowls. Although using mugs were not as convenient as bowls, it turned out to be a fun and enjoyable experience as we discovered creative ways to eat our food in mugs and cooking pots.

Doenjang-jjigae

Doenjang-jjigae which is a soybean paste stew is a Korean traditional jjigae made from the primary ingredient of doenjang. We had it with kimchi and dumplings and it was scrumptious.

Take-outs or Eating out:

Chaplin’s Restaurant

I tried the Ramen with chicken chashu, which was really delicious! Highly recommend trying out this place when you are in Washington DC!

Jewel of India

I had the garlic Naan which is a traditional Indian bread typically baked in a clay oven together with butter chicken which is delicious dish containing pieces of marinated chicken cooked in a creamy tomato sauce.

Sushi Takeout from Wasabi Bistro

My friends and I ordered this sushi platter from Wasabi Bistro using the DoorDash application. This is one of the applications together with uberEats you want to download to get your food delivered anytime to your doorstep!
