Living in a hostel overseas can be exciting but challenging at times. Here are some tips and tricks to getting the most out of your hostel experience!

1. Apply early!
Housing overseas may be limited, especially for universities located in the city. Applying early increases your chances of getting a better spot. Once all travel details have been confirmed, don’t procrastinate and start your search and application. Private housing can get very pricey!

2. Location
Not all overseas universities provide on-campus housing or it might be limited. While living near the campus is ideal, do note that hostel price can get quite expensive! Alternatively, living in the suburbs would be friendlier to the wallet, but do check public transportation means to school beforehand! On top of that, you should also consider the availability of nearby amenities such as supermarkets, healthcare, gyms and entertainment.

3. Thorough checks
After getting the key and moving in, do thorough checks on the condition of the apartment. Ensure that all facilities such as lights, kitchen appliances, power plugs are working and raise any issues with the landlord as soon as possible. Ensure all items in the lease are present and take pictures and videos of everything as proof. Think of it as a detailed room tour! Avoid paying for the repair when you are not at fault.

4. Make friends!
Living alone is tough, don’t be afraid to make friends with your roommates or neighbours. Just give them a smile and a friendly hello when you see them around. Participate in any hostel-organised activities to meet new people.
