In this post, I would like to introduce some of the dishes I ate and restaurants I have been to while studying in KAIST. One of the main reasons for choosing Korea for exchange was obviously FOOD. Without further ado, let’s begin.

1. 하레 Hale

Address : 2 층, 114 Eoeun-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea

Price range : S$9~12

Hale is a restaurant known for its Japanese-style pork cutlet. I ordered cheese pork cutlet shown in the picture. It was so filled with cheese that I think all cheese-lovers should try if they are going near KAIST. As for me, I always look for food that is good-for-money. In terms of the food portion, it was a lot given its price. If you pay a few more bucks, you can get a free-flow drink. I personally think this is a MUST-GO place.

2. 화통왕돌판구이 Hwatong

Address : 9-13 Eoeun-ro 48beon-gil, Eoeun-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea

Price range : S$19 for 2 PAX (Lunch)

I went to this restaurant during lunchtime with a friend. The picture above shows exactly what you can get for S$19. Furthermore, as what most Korean restaurants do, side-dishes are refillable 🙂 The charcoal grilled Bulgogi and Kimchijjigae tasted really good too. Recommended for lunch.

3. 맑음 Malgm : Indian Restuarant

Address : 112-7 Oncheon 2(i)-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea

Price range : S$10~12

대전 맛집 추천] 어은동 인도카레집 '맑음 (Malgm)' : 네이버 블로그If you miss the Indian food while staying in Korea, you can try this restaurant although the taste is a little localised. Generally, this place is popular among KAIST students and I personally liked the taste and the portion of food served. Hence, recommended.

4. 삼부자부대찌개 Sambuja Budaejjigae

Address : 111-20 Eoeun-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea

Price range : S$8.50~

삼부자부대찌개 - 한국과학기술원 탕 / 찌개 / 전골 | 맛집검색 망고 ...One of the well-known Korean dish in Singapore is army stew (Budaejjigae in Korean). The taste was good here as well with refillable side-dishes. Portion was big and I felt that the dish was a good value for money.

5. 궁칼국수 Gung Kalguksu

Address : 110-1 Eoeun-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea

Price range : S$8~

Kalguksu is a Korean-style flat noodle made of flour, and is also referred to as a noodle dish made of Kalguksu. One could be surprised to notice Kalguksu stores quite often in Daejeon. My KAIST friend told me that it was partly due to the fact that there used to have many flour factories in Daejeon. One thing to take note in this restaurant is that the kimchi is exceptionally spicy as compared to kimchi offered in other restaurants. I think it is one of the dishes you have to try in Korea and I recommend you to try the dish in this restaurant.
